Kiwanis and Literacy

This month I had the opportunity to attend a Kiwanis Club meeting in a local area near me. I met the president of the club through an American Legion meeting I was attending in my community. The president who was at the American Legion meeting knew I am a children’s book author. He invited me to a meeting which I attended.
At the meeting, several local school youth groups from the middle and high school were doing presentations. I was asked to make a presentation in which I introduced myself as a local children’s book author and spoke on the importance of my mantra, “Literacy, Learning, and Legacy”. I mentioned that literacy rates are at an all time low in which many children are not reading on grade level.
At another meeting of the Kiwanis which I was asked not to attend, I was officially approved as a member of the Kiwanis since literacy is very much aligned with a mission of Kiwanis.
Once I was approved, I was informed that the local Kiwanis in adjoining city would be buying some books for the library and vending machine in an elementary school.

I was really surprised to see my five books in the vending machine: Brains Over Brawn, Anna’s Amazing Alaskan Adventure, Living on a Military Base, Nicoli Picoli, and I Was Just About… . One other book showing to being put in the machine was my first book , Did You Come Home for Lunch?
So when a student earns a coin, the student can come down to the vending machine and pick out a book as a reward .
I am so blessed to have been given this opportunity to help increase literacy since my mantra is “Literacy, Learning, and Legacy.” I personally want to thank Jones Kiwanis and Jones Elementary for allowing me this awesome opportunity.
Jones Kiwanis Club would like to extend a special thanks to new member and author Mark McCraw for not only offering a discount but donating some of his incredible books for the Jones Elementary School book vending machine! Our Longhorn readers will have so many cool options when they meet their reading goal!
